CHAPTER NINETEEN

“Another day, another date,” Krystal murmured.

“It’s not a date,” Gabe replied.

“You’re sure looking sharp for ‘not a date’.”

“That’s just us rubbing off on him,” Ellen said.

“Are you gonna fuck her?” Krystal asked.

He sighed. “Probably not.”

“I really love that it’s not a clear answer,” Krystal replied, laughing.

“I have permission from everyone, including Chloe, and Vanessa is actually very attractive. So if she propositions me...I might? I’m still not sure.” He sighed. “Babe, will you–”

Ellen stepped into the bathroom. “Yes, sweetheart.”

She began messing with his hair. “Thank you.”

“You seem kinda nervous,” Chloe murmured.

“Well, I know at this point I should be used to it when you all crowd in the bathroom doorway anytime I’m getting ready, but…”

“Don’t pull that, come on. Did something happen already?” she asked.

“I offered to pick her up. She rather curtly told me she could drive herself,” he replied.

“Oh...mmm. Interesting.”

“There,” Ellen said, stepping back.

“Why is that interesting?” Gabe asked.

He finished studying himself in the mirror, was about as satisfied as he was going to be, and then left the bathroom with some difficulty as everyone else moved to get out of the way.

“Sounds like she’s snippish,” Chloe replied. “And Vanessa only gets snippish when she’s nervous about something.”

“Could it be something unrelated?” he asked.

“No. She’s usually pretty good about not snapping on people unrelated to whatever it is that’s bothering her and if it was big enough to cause bleed-over in her social interactions, I would’ve heard about it. Either from her or from mom. Which means she’s nervous about you in particular.”

“Why would she be nervous?” Gabe walked into the living room and began getting into his shoes and coat.

“Because she’s got a crush on you,” Krystal murmured.

“Not helping,” Gabe replied.

“She might be right,” Chloe said, a little awkwardly. He looked at her. “I mean, it tracks. I can’t really think of any other reason why.”

“Maybe she’s just intimidated by Gabe,” Ellen said.

“Naturally,” Krystal replied. “But that normally leads to…”

“A crush,” Ellen murmured.

“Stop writing fan fiction about me in your head,” Gabe said, yanking his coat into place.

“But it’s so much fun!” Krystal replied.

He sighed. “Well, I guess I can’t stop you.”

“...well, you could try.”

He stared at her for a moment, then shook his head. “Don’t tempt me, I have to go.”

Gabe said his farewells and headed outside into the cold. And it was cold again, but it at least hadn’t snowed anymore. Although, he reflected as he got into his car and started driving into town, he kind of wished it would. That whole day of building the snow fort had actually been really fun and he was interested in continuing.

His thoughts didn’t stay on the snow for long.

Once Chloe had given him Vanessa’s number, he’d fired off a text appraising her of the situation. She’d responded almost immediately, saying that she would be free in half an hour and she wanted to meet him somewhere and talk. She’d picked a sushi place and sent him the address.

He wasn’t sure what exactly to expect. While
